Ah, I'd read about it online and for some reason I'd assumed it was post-E4, though I guess most people farming it would've probably beaten the game anyway.

Ya I did try it a few times and got several pokemon that, while they may not be that interesting, at least filled out my pokedex. I tried to send out a few of the less stereotypical pokemon in return.

I tend to take a more positive view about it. Yes, for the first while everyone will be inundated by a bunch of boring, crappy streams. But eventually most of the "good" players will rise to the top (much like they already have on youtube). The crap streams will still be there of course, but you'll just ignore them.
