I doubt there are many shows in the history of television that knew from the beginning where they were going with every storyline. Things change in production and shows are always at the mercy of the network and have to keep getting ratings.

Lindelof does tend to strand himself from time to time. Dude is great at characterization and making people three-dimensional in his writing but writes himself into corners sometimes and gets lazy with writing the way out (World War Z, Tomorrowland, Prometheus.)
