I think the joke is that people get history mixed up after enough time has passed. They did a similar thing with the bit about whalers on the moon.

In support of Sherlock jumping into the truck, note that he delayed jumping off the ledge, asking Moriarty for a moment of privacy, which seems a bit out of character for Sherlock. This may have been because the truck wasn't there yet, and he needed to stall for time.
