You can donate them to Planet Aid, but that organization has had some ethical issues in the past. I’m not aware of its current standing. And, I have no idea how sustainable the shoe recycling is.

I have not been able to find a shoe recycling provider, except for Nike (non-metal sneakers only), and their documentation on the sustainability/life cycle assessment of the process is highly suspect.

I have a similar story re: me trying to finish an already-late paper, stopping to cut a bagel (and a piece of my finger), and continuing to type the paper all night then running to the school nurse after I submitted it. They thought I was nuts.
