I’m an expat Brit living in the Midwest, and I wouldn’t recommend it as a place to retire. Both my wife and I crave being further out west, somewhere with mountains, or god, hills at least. Its so bloody flat here.

I know the UK government can be incompetent at times, but I don’t think it’d be as easy as that to get around.

UK has it already, with the diesel engine no less.

The rule is if a car is in the UK for more than six months, it has to get registered and wear UK plates. Maybe there’s an exemption if he’s there as a representative of US government or military, but I’d be surprised if he was able to keep it for 3 years in the UK without it being registered.

Ha! Nice.

You can already get those in the UK.

Everyone will hate you, it WILL be keyed, you’ll grow to hate driving when you’re not on a highway, and the cost of taxing and fueling this monstrosity in the UK will bankrupt you.

The UK got that already, with RHD, and a Vauxhall badge on the nose:

I’ve seen one of those, converted into a camper no less, in Edinburgh!

You’d probably need an HGV license for that monstrosity!

You can buy Jeeps in the UK already, including diesel Wranglers.

Driving and parking that would be a complete nightmare in London, and I’d bet you ten to one odds someone would key it within the first month.

You’re probably right. But you’ve still got yearly taxes (set by engine size) and inspections. Plus you’re gonna have to find a specialist to take care of it for you OR somewhere to wrench on it (London and the surrounding suburbs are the most densely populated area of the UK so good luck) and parts aren’t going to

Ha!

You can with one of these!

Most European countries regularly armed police, with the British police being I think the sole exception (we do still have SWAT-style armed response units, and the greater London area is densley patrolled by them). They also don’t usually perform the PIT maneuver either, the standard tactic is a spike strip followed

Right? The ones that were tweaked by Prodrive for the UK market are supposed to much better to drive. FWD only, but the improvements they made are supposed to be worth it.

Not a bad idea, but that’s a big if. American cars just aren’t that popular in the UK, and TBH, the good ones are probably already in the country. And there’s plenty of specialty importers in the UK to rely on to bring the car of your dreams over. But maybe he’d get the right one, who knows.

Yeah, the Astra diesels might not, but we also have no shortage of these:
