The big problem with tasks, is there is no reminder (no auto email, or sms via gcal).
A big benefit to a "portable server" is you can take your files with you easily. Imagine taking your entire DVD collection when you visit your family this holiday, or making a backup of your friends pc before re-imaging the system. Heck, if your NAS handles your downloading tasks (BT, NZB, ETC) you can just sync it…
A NAS does not needs tons of power, but for some tasks, such as running sickbeard, sabnzb, bittorrent, dlna transcoding or other "server-style" tasks, a more powerful system is better.

I used to heavily use the gmail "star" feature to mark "action require" emails, but it got to the point where it was out of sight, out of mind.
Hmm, I thought this was going to be about cleaning your digital RESCUE tool kit. By that I mean making sure you have the current 'best of" antivirus and Antimalware tools on your usb drive, with the latest updates. The latest boot cd files, latest version of proc explorer, etc.
I am also looking into an android on a stick, and have been waiting to see how XBMC is gonna shake out, as XBMC and Netflix are my 2 big must haves for a good media device.
Target does track how many "no receipt returns" a user has done and it is a maximum of $100 dollars a year if I recall.
