I’ve seen a NM plate with a black background with yellow digits that really pop against it.  There’s also a pepper on it, I think?

So that’s what’s the checkered-flag-looking thing is. It makes for incorrect scanning - if the first digit is 7, it reads as Z, for example.

It’s a decades-long habit I can’t break, even with me permanently stuck in the greys.
