It’s layers upon layers, here. On second glance, I’m upset at myself for not recognizing that the AV Club was referring to Lori Loughlin’s kid, not Felicity Huffman or her kid with that People article.

I think we should be more upset that the AV Club is quoting People. They’re quoting a “source” who told them that, not Felicity Huffman, and not a source capable of offering much beyond stating the obvious.
Literally just describing my perception, which I qualified with the same point you make. I agree that it’s a pointless comment that I probably should’ve just thought, though.
This article and its assertion that he’s been busy seems so strange to me. I’m a fan and saw The Big Sick in the theater despite generally not bothering with them anymore, and he’s seemed like he’s disappeared since. It’s possible that it’s just because he’s not doing many podcasts these days, though. That’s…
I remember circa 2005 when I discovered emulators, I thought it was completely guilt-free because there was no possible way the companies who made them 10+ years earlier were able to make money off them anymore. Turns out it was just because most people who would pay money for them hadn’t become old and nostalgic…
I’ve seen them do that on the sites that have been on Kinja longer. The way Kinja weighs these things often puts comments that are just intended to attract a lot of outrage front and center if a lot of people reply to it.
No doubt. I just think there’s something worthwhile in the personality type that is inclined to question everything. Alex Jones forfeited any goodwill I might once have allowed him with his Sandy Hook denial, but it’s similar to how I feel about deeply religious people. There’s a beauty in what and how they believe,…
It’s so weird, because I was a teenager when Waking Life came out and absolutely venerated counterculture figures like Abbie Hoffman and Angela Davis. Despite getting that he was being a bit ridiculous in that moment with the loudspeaker on the top of a car, ranting while driving down empty streets, he still seemed…
It’s definitely worthwhile to make the distinction to idiots who think they have a constitutional right to be assholes wherever and whenever they want, but I’ve never felt totally comfortable with everyone touting this “private businesses can’t practice censorship” thing. Corporations have a ton of power, and it seems…
Yeah, you’re right. And in retrospect, I realize no one mentioned racism but me. I guess I was just making the point that this is a case showing how easy it is for people to make these kinds of revealing mistakes even when they consciously disavow racism and bigotry.
Just curious if you care to elaborate. I’m down to take the criticism.
I think you’re right that it shows implicit bias, but it’s important not to take that too far. Hughes is clearly an ally. I think allies occasionally come across as performative, as I’d say NuAVClub does in general, but this is just a dumb mistake and certainly not indicative of racism. Implicit bias has terrible…
The person who did it probably had shitty motives (i.e., getting him out of jail), but this article is pretty infuriating. Hopefully they get paid back by R. Kelly if their intention wasn’t merely to get him out of jail, but at least his kids receive what is owed.
It could be the most difficult to assemble jury ever.
The saying is “If you come at the King, you best not miss.” “Don’t come at the King” would be a pretty banal aphorism.
People fall in love with shitty, abusive people all the time. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt, it doesn’t mean anything positive about R. Kelly. Their feeling that they’re “well cared for” is the saddest part about this interview to me, even if there wasn’t everything else that is bad about their situation.. …
Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams are both like that for me. I love their senses of humor and the ideas they’re conveying, but I just can never get into reading their books. It’s like playing a tabletop RPG with people who name their characters with joke names and don’t take it seriously. It’s a perfectly fine way to…
I’m not sure if I’d put Happiness or Naveed as second, but they’re definitely my other two favorites, then Clumsy, then Gravity, which I liked only because it was released at the height of my OLP fandom and never listen to now. I pretty much ignore everything after Gravity, too, but I thought the one with Angels/Losing…
This is pretty much the perfect line-up for my friend group. We weren’t concert-going until the early aughts, so we saw Gravity, V, and Golden State era peformances. We met Ed Kowalczyk after one concert, and he told us to stay away from any drugs that didn’t grow naturally but that “‘shrooms are a motherfuck.” We…
Ha. Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought of Quayle.
