I definitely had the same reactions reading the books, particularly having read the novel that the film and manga of BR were adapted from. It is the televised spectacle and reporting that makes the two feel overly similar to me.
Be sure to read the minotaur legend while you watch since the tributes were cribbed from that as well.

There was no other reason to castrate what was a pretty hot couple of pages in the book and turn it into a scene from Frosty the Snowman instead (I was going to compare it's innocuousness to the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe but I don't want to denigrate the White Queen.)
