Although I did have a lot of fun with Moncrief Lanier, an evil bard/cleric who was played with two goals: 1) never tell the truth to anyone outside the party and 2) never roll a die.

Yeah, as much as I loved early AD&D at the time. there were a whole lot of things about it that seemed like they wrote down the first idea they had, didn't playtest it, shrugged "good enough" and published.
