Because he did have something to do with the show, just likely not in quite some time. To this day people credit JJ Abrams with LOST because he was listed as an EP for the entire series, yet he had nothing to do with the show after (IIRC) the first episode.
Without “I put up some money in the first 6 months of this project,” many projects don’t happen. That is certainly worthy of an executive producer credit.
