I see a lot of BMW's M engine, but the M54 (2.5, 3.0 L) is perfect. Wards loved it, owners love it, it's just great. Found in every model from 3 series to 7. Also, because straight 6.

Anything in VAG EA827 Diesel family, smooth, economical, not that laggy, runs forever, and can gain 30% in hp with just a reflash. Probably the most common engines in Europe. Nothing too fancy, but really really good.

VW's 2.0L TFSI turbo 4. What can't it power? Easy to tune, easy (enough) to maintain and repair, yet compact and efficient. It is the VW group's workhorse for a very good reason.
