This wasn’t racist, merely ignorant. I mean ignorant in the literal sense, not the pejorative — as in “he didn’t know what he didn’t know” not “he’s such an idiot.” I’m sure there are billions of things in this world I don’t know, and some of them are things I think I know but am mistaken.
