A source of complication is the border between Ireland, and NI. As of now there are no checkpoints because both nations are within the EU and thus the same customs union. There were a whole bunch of discussions about what kind of relaionship the UK would have with Europe. This future relationship was never detirmined.

What will of the people? Norway, Canada +? They also voted in the 2017 general election for the parliament so what year version of will if the people should be followed?

To follow procedut, a referendum in teh UK is a 4-5  month process. that ship sailed in May.

When it became obvious that a no deal was more likely, the EU ramped up their preperations last spring. The extension was really to either: remove mays redlines, revoke article 50, or crash out as there wouldn’t be enough time for a new referendum. the EU as since ramped up preperations they began planning for 2 years
