I think that “Just checking in” is a simple, polite way to broach a request, especially if the success of your request relies less on authority and more on negotiation.  I have always thought of it as a bit of a deference, which has it’s uses.

I know what you mean. I don’t like it as the main ingredient like you get it on a Dim Sum menu, but when it’s still crunchy, chopped in fine strands and mixed in with the noodles of a high quality Pho, it’s very good.

Speaking of work lunch, we go to our usual Pho place at least once a week and my soup is Tripe, tendon, rare beef and meatballs.
