Usually just by their specific country ("Indian", "Bangladeshi", etc), don't really hear them being referred to as a group much.

Just for reference, in the US "Asian" means "East Asian", Central Asian doesn't really come up much, and South Asian isn't considered "Asian".

Yeah, there's nothing to pinpoint really, it's just the term that was in common use in a period of pervasive racism against the group, so it accumulated certain connotations. Nothing about the term itself.
