Eh, every show runner gets pressured to do idiotic things to their show. If you put your name on a series, it's your responsibility to make sure it doesn't suck.
Besson is only credited as a writer, though. The other two writers (not a good sign in itself) are also the directors, one appears to be a DP and the other only has a short to his name.

I vaguely remember the story being that the series was originally planned for five seasons, but by season 4 they were pretty sure they were getting cancelled, so the last two seasons got crammed into one. When they were unexpectedly picked up for another season, 5 had to be padded out a bit beyond the original story.

The first season was awesome, if you're into that sort of thing (ie fun, but cheesy supernatural action-girl show, with a fair amount of sex).

Ah, yes, we're definitely going off different definitions of 'good' here: you're talking about "good enough", whereas I meant basically the exact opposite, let's call it "actually good". Both are perfectly valid, of course.
That one's pretty simple to settle: from a storytelling perspective, 'formulated to appeal to as many people as possible' is about as far from 'good' as it gets.
All I can think is Captain Malcolm Reynolds seems to have done well for himself after being largely based off a Confederate soldier.
