Which is what Jonathan Demme did, as I said on the first sentence. He was great at making exploitation attractive for critics.

Considering the book version of events is a 13 girl who has just been sold into a marriage “consenting” to have sex with a 30 year old man who doesn’t speak her language, not sure if I trust Martin’s call on this one.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s, perhaps? I like this distinction of pre-rotten, we know we are in full 70s New York when the city’s lead changes from nerdy-but-still-handsome Jack Lemmon to full-on grouch Walter Matthau.
“Oh just one more thing...”
[turns around, fires both barrels of shotgun]
I don’t know what Ben & Li’l Sebastian means.
I find him off-putting, although I’ve seen a few of his SNL bits and he seems to be a capable-enough comic performer. I do kind of feel constantly surprised that he hasn’t died of some kind of overdose, though.
This is 40 is like hearing REO Speedwagon’s lead singer describe how happy he is in his relationship. It’s supposed to be an advertisement for growing up and accepting responsibility etc.etc. but his wife is an insufferable harpy and his daughter is a vapid jerk. Anything to do with his own independent personality is…
I have no interest in watching any actual Judd Apatow movie, but you make it sound like he’s probably the best person for Pete Davidson to associate with in order to live long enough to be a boring 40 year old.
I just... I’m just not on board the Pete Davidson train. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve no ill-will to those who are, but I watch this trailer and I listen to a whole load of people rave about how great Pete Davidson is, and I feel like Ben in Parks and Recreation when everyone’s creaming themselves over Li’l Sebastian.
Again Judd Apatow will channel his crypto-social-conservative conformist sensibilities into a story about a successful person doing things that they did not do in order to become successful. Amy Schumer had to say that her comic persona was a “broken” person to get an Apatow movie and make a feature-length infomercial…
“Why, station by station, it seems to form a track all the way to my house!”
Curious, who is currently leading the national polls?
NOT THE MAMA!
ooh, what’s the first
Well that’s a really valid articulate reaction to a movie that I still tend to think doesn’t have that much depth. But I’m glad you found so much to value in it and perhaps on a rewatch I will as well :)
Most people suffer from mental illness. This was exploring someone with a severe illness, how he had very little supporting him up, that he could be a somewhat functional member of society as a result, but once the supports(medication, therapy) started to be taken away, him mental state deteriorates. As his mental…
I also saw it for the first time this weekend, because I wasn’t interested in it enough to see it until it was for rent on demand. I really was not looking forward to alienation porn that quotes other movies, which is what I thought it would be and what it was, BUT I thought it was remarkably well done. The filmmaking…
The film is an examination on mental illness from the sides of one dealing with a severe case and from the side of how society and individuals deal with those that have it who need the most help.
Am I really petty enough to hope Joker wins an award I don’t give two shits about just to spite the condescending cool kids at the AV Club?
I wrote several hundred words to supplement the header pic with this kind of information.
