I want you to pull my hair five times and call me The Grinch
Secret of NIMH. The owl. The house slipping into the mud.
“The Watcher in the Woods.” My parents only let us watch Disney movies as a kid. It’s about a damn poltergeist that terrorizes a kid....I’ve never been able to rewatch it. Also, “Darby O’Gill and the Little People.” Disney was NOT for kids in the 70's.
The Heffalumps and Woozles song was definitely horror.
Large Marge from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.
Who framed roger rabbit has a couple scenes
Return to OZ was somewhat traumatizing, even though I was 11 when it came out. Between the Electro Shock therapy, the petrified cowardly lion and those damnable beasts with wheels for hands and feet, I just couldn’t.
She boiled it to get the skeleton free of all the crud. She was planning to move across the country, and wanted to bring its skeleton with her. So, somewhat less creepy than it could have been.
I was born in Belfast and we lived there until the mid 90s. I was born at a time when the violence of the Troubles was slowly, painfully drawing to a close. All the same, my earliest memory of home is a string of battered police vans rolling down the street outside my house.
My sister was in a relationship with a man, “Alan”, who was bad news. He was quite a bit older than her, no steady job, never had any money (in fact was always hitting her up for money for beer or car repairs) and increasingly was mooching off her kindness and moving himself into her home without an official…
Not too scary per se, but I was a little kid at the time of this and didn’t really get scared at all around the time. Shoot -I used to make my way to the outhouse at night if I needed to, even though the house I lived in was in a small opening in the middle of rolling wooded hills.
I have a few stories- but here’s the one I decided on sharing this year. It’s a longer one:
We bought our new house right at the outset of COVID, so we were able to get the ”panic” price, and got our old house listed just as the market was getting into its “Oh, nevermind” phase. The new place is only about two miles from the old, so while we were waiting for the closing date, we rode our bikes over just to…
This is just a weird little tale I thought I’d share. Not so much frightening, but a haunted moment all the same.
Nearer to the beginning of the pandemic, I took to walking around a nearby graveyard. I would bike or walk down to it, then wander through the graves - just walking, sometimes reading, mostly sitting. I…
I’ve worked in one place that’s supposedly got multiple ghosts and I have a story about one of them. This place was a restored Carnegie library that’s probably the 3rd building at that address. Its foundation sits on top of the 2 previous buildings which date back to the 1860s, before the original street level…
Man, I was not expecting to have to take deep breaths because of the weird underwear story but yikes that’s terrifying. And the lack of resolution!
If you’d like a palate cleanser, I also have a weird underwear story that is not really scary at all unless you are particularly afraid of bank robberies.
I worked at a…
I’d love to share a story with y’all that I love, though it is not my own. It was told to me by my very sweet, very Irish mother-in-law, who after telling me supes casually her grandmother survived the Boston Strangler by beating the shit out of him with her CANE over dinner, I’ve learned to shut up and listen when…
Almost 20 years ago my father suddenly passed away and I had several visits from what I believe to have been his spirit.
A few years ago, I had a great job: It was my first office job, and it was in my field of study. I got along great with all my colleagues, we had a lot of fun together, and I learned so much working there.
