Sorry, that’s crap. A Honda Fit can cross the country just as easily as a 21' truck. We have paved interstates. We aren’t driving across a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Very few of the people with giant SUVs and trucks actually need giant SUVs and trucks. Even in Manhattan, Kansas.

I have mostly the same perspective. For me the answer is to buy cars that haven’t been made in 30 years. Do it right and you can find the right kind of special for you in a very different price bracket than a Ferrari.

The truth is all new cars are pretty fast now. Even the crappier sub compacts. They all can easily do over 100mph. It is really only the car enthusiasts that have an issue with the car.
