nah health is one of the most basic human rights that affects EVERYONE. it’s the most clear messaging possible, and if we can’t coalesce around universal healthcare/single payer we’ll never tackle anything else. It’s clear, hugely significant, a momentum builder, and foundational. what else is there?

SINGLE PAYER AND LET’S MOVE PAST THIS ATROCIOUS NIGHTMARE

that’s also a failure of leadership though. you can organize a large, broad coalition by explaining how fundamental principals (e.g. healthcare is a human right) helps EVERYONE in the coalition.

LOL WHITE PEOPLE DATING ASIANS THAT’S FUCKING HILARIOUS

The Doug Jones vote is inconsequential sure. I guess I’m more frustrated that these things are constantly framed as “just accept/settle for what the Democratic party is giving you it’s better than the republicans” as if there’s no way to actually push a progressive agenda forward.

yeah but that doesn’t mean that’s all we should hope for, or we shouldn’t criticize people. what is this aversion to “we deserve better” mentality?

You’re objectively wrong and I’m wondering why you’re doing this for something so easily researched.

I hope that too! Seriously we need major wins in 2018, and then a presidency with an agenda to really push things in the right direction so we can get past this already abominable agenda being passed.

How about we don’t use “they’re all the same” but rather “we deserve better” and what we do is after we say that, we wink and the wink means that of course we’ll take anything better but we don’t let them know that up-front? Basically we raise our expectations but we know we’ll take what we can get.

Eh we’re both being disingenuous with each other’s arguments to a degree. Obama’s policies led to extremely minimal, fragile gains (as we’ve seen), and the Overton window continues to shift right. There is this desire to “return to the status quo” for Democrats because Trump is such an aberration when the status quo fu

A Democrat didn’t win, and we already see what the losing strategy is (the ACA, though better, was not a good solution for healthcare by any stretch- see the starving person analogy). Losing is not running on anything substantive besides “I’m not that person”. We know for a fact these are losing strategies. So what’s

Sorry I probably didn’t frame my question/point as clearly as I would have liked. I’m not trying to say “they’re all the same” or equate centrist-left dems with homophobic, racist bigoted right wing CHUDs. My point was more that we need to expect more from leadership, especially because the past 8 years are basically

Wait but then how do we make any substantial progress on issues, if incrementalism/”at least I’m not soandso” continues to get wiped out and fail? I mean the “center” is presently pretty right wing, so how do we move the country left on issues like healthcare?

lol “asking for minimum wage” = institutional support for higher wages apparently.

nah that wasn’t your point at all and the fact that you don’t know about basic concepts of labor economics, or the current employment landscape in different industries, tells everyone plenty

...he then followed up the bit of tepid snickering with “COVFEFE MUCH?” and the entire room burst into raucous laughter

UBI but low enough to still have people need to work in order to survive, or UBI with a welfare safety net, or what?

The same thing that’s happening now. The conflict still exists for poor uneducated American citizens with few skills, and as automation continues to increase wages will lower further. What’s your point?

This particular instance is very nice and heartwarming but overall, I think we’ve lost. At least for our generation and the next few generations we won’t see any sort of significant positive change in the balance of power between people and employer/company. It will just continue to get worse.
