Last summer I moved to go from a 3-hour roundtrip commute from South Bay to Orange County to an ~8-minute drive to and from work, and that’s if I miss all the lights.

Richard Dawkins did a wonderful miniseries on this, called “Enemies of Reason”. It’s on YouTube, really worth the watch.

Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time—when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome

I know, it is mind boggling. It stems from a fear and suspicion of elites- experts in a specific professional field. Their education intimidates and humiliates them, they view elites as condescending “on their high horses.” It really is a “you think you’re better than me with your fancy pants learning?” attitude that

What do you expect? She’s a middle aged woman who smokes/smoked like a chimney and doesn’t do any gym time besides what’s needed to keep her tummy flat.

I’m too old to care now. If you want to go watch someone dance while the CD/MP3s you have at home plays over the speakers, whatever. More power to you. It’s not for me, but neither are GETTIN TIPSAY IN DA CLURRRRB or fidget spinners.

The concerts I go to, all the performers are a minimum in their 60s (The Zombies, Eric Burdon, The Turtles, The Rascals- all the people from the 1960s).

Seriously, some of these performers have such weak, over-produced voices on their records, you know they cannot keep it up live, dancing or not.

Oh wow, I thought she was at least dancing a lot. Hm.

This is why I go to (some) rock shows - and not pop. You know instantly if they sing/play live and if they are good or not. Yes, vocal ability, generally speaking is not as great compared to pop or r&b, but that’s not the point of rock, is it?

Kylie Minogue. Singing and moderate dance movement no syncing. All the strenuous stuff is done by the back up dancers. No stress on her so she can belt it out live.

Jesus. As someone who sustained a traumatic brain injury from a car wreck, and who will never be the same, I actually feel for both parties. This is hugely traumatic. And I think that it might actually be worse to have caused one. If anyone has any empathy at all, the notion that trying to get through an intersection

I would rather hear a real, human voice every time, no matter how imperfect. Do less dancing, more singing. Take some damn voice lessons to strengthen your voice. Whatever. I don’t go to concerts to see someone mouth words over a track.

I know what you mean. I think your taste changing (or just stuff like me being too thick to get it the first time round) is valid, but, be honest about it. No one thinks better of you if you’ve been championing a film from the beginning, so why pretend that’s the case when you haven’t? What’s the gain? I don’t

I’ve talked about this exact scenario before. I wasn’t much of a fan of Hot Fuzz the first time, but subsequent viewings have shown me the error of my ways, and now I like it much more than Shaun, and it is definitely in my top 5. So, I’m exactly one of the people you’re talking about. Obviously I’m not everybody, but

well at least you’re reasonable about your expectations. “i was going in expecting it to become the new best movie i’ve ever seen in my life forever and ever amen but it fell short”

Prestige is the only Christopher Nolan film that is close to being perfect. Memento is good the first time you see it, but I see cracks every time I try to rewatch it. The rest are above average to very good, but Prestige is the one I revisit...

RE: the wood ape:

why would I watch this when I could rewatch The Prestige
