I was replying in kind. You said to Iris: “Do you not see how that’s a little messed up?” Which struck me as pretty arrogant. Thus the tone of my response. Being mean isn’t any cooler when it’s wrapped up in “adult” style jargon.

Do you not understand that this was a public piece of writing? It’s not like we broke into her house and read her diary. We’re allowed to have opinions. Don’t be such a lemming. Critical thinking is your friend. 

No. We’re allowed to critique published writing. This was not a personal letter. I’m sure the personal version the writer gives her husband is much more, well, personal.

If the person is publishing the goodbye letter in the newspaper, there’s a huge chance at least some people might find fault with certain aspect of it.    

No. This was a published essay. As such it’s fair game to critique the writing. It’s not like IrisJK snuck into their bedroom and stole a “final love letter” and then analyzed it. Chill out. Some people care about the actual quality of a piece of published writing.
