In my area (far-north suburb of Chicago), the high schools close due to safety concerns for teenage drivers, but the grammar schools stay open. The high schools actually have buffer days built into the schedule to allow for this.
Used the ash stumps in my fire pit, so they only traveled 100 feet, but excellent point.
