At first I was thinking, “Oh no, so many dogs, this is clearly a horror movie where something bad definitely happens to the do—”

Yes! When Evil Lurks was the best of the year by far (at least of what I managed to see).

I’m not so sure they used it to mean third, though. They’re saying that many viewers would name the penultimate episode (which was Escape from Shit Mountain, the episode a lot of viewers and critics named as the season’s peak) as the best, but AVClub is naming the third episode as the best instead.

I responded to the first season the exact same way, but stuck with it because of promises made. I liked the season as a whole, but it was almost too painful to get there.

Deeply disturbing film. Melton was great as well! I imagine he’ll do well on the awards circuit.

Now playing

The “silent” music video version of it really drives that home, it’s amazing:

Yes, I was just going to offer up an honorable mention to Bauhaus’s Ziggy Stardust, an absolute favorite!

Oooh, I’d never heard of or heard that Sound of Silence cover, so thank you. It’s great. At first I was skeptical thinking it wouldn’t connect without the harmonizing (that’s the point!), but taking that element out definitely ended up fueling this rock opera take in a very satisfying way.

Relieved to see “The Chauffeur” get its due

I didn’t like her screenplay either! I just don’t think a movie of it was ever going to work the way the book did. The surprises in the book worked because of the narration “trick,” and they failed to find a strategy to have a similar impact on screen so it really turned into a different concept entirely. But I’m glad

It was a fun, clever beach read, but no masterpiece. But I agree that he really flubbed the movie adaptation due to what felt very much like an utter misunderstanding.

Citizen Ruth is one of my all-time favorites and it feels actually more relevant and incisive each year.

It also very much takes sides. It just depicts humanity and flaws on both sides, which is one of the reasons it’s so damn good.

Agreed that Tamerlane’s episode was the one with the least interesting demise. Also the second-least interesting offspring (after Prospero) in general. Also seemingly the one with the biggest stretch of a Poe connection.

Luckily it turned up a week early!

Just felt boring & tedious to me.

Yeah but souled-Angel had the conscience that de-souled Angel did not. The show played fast and loose by having him even go by a different name when de-souled to establish a clear moral delineation, and as a result audiences seemed far more willing to forgive Angelus’ behavior when Angel was souled than they were to

I’m two episodes in and this is the type of show that deserves episode-by-episode write-ups because of the sheer scope of it. So much to track!

That’s the really famous one, definitely (the 1980 one). Was the more recent Angelina Jolie one a remake of that? I assumed it was at the time but never bothered to investigate.

Swarm was a little bit about that (though ultimately not as much as the marketing would have you believe)
