Met him at a local Mexican (!) restaurant years ago. He was doing a fundraiser. I was eating nachos. I said “Hello, Mr. Emmer.”, and he said “Please. Tom.”.

Happened to me. Luckily, it was the last performance I was playing as Tevye in my high school production of Fiddler, and the gruff, croaky voice fit the characterization perfectly. Couldn’t speak for a week afterward, though.

This won’t really resonate with anyone outside of Minnesota, but our local Tex Mex chain “Zantigo’s” discontinued the two menu items I loved and always ordered: the beef & bean tostada, and the beef enchiladas.

Back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Taco John’s ground up their taco meat super-fine. It was almost a paste. It was greasy and amazing. They also prepared the refries from scratch in the kitchen. I miss that.

The movie was helped immensely by how charming and charismatic he is. My wife kept saying “I can’t believe that’s the guy from Kim’s Convenience!”
