Agreed. Even the trailer just feels off.

And the music from that sequence is amazing.

I remember my family was kind of put off my the one American kid in the film, but watching it now I think he was pretty well cast. He brings a sense of otherness in both his accent and mannerisms.

I've always loved the 2003 film and it's had a place in my heart since childhood. Saw it again fairly recently and it held up very well, so I'd definitely say it's worth checking out :)
