Yeah me too, and if I wasn't feeling too committed, I'd turn the game off after Mystic Cavern Zone. If I ran out of lives/continues before beating the game, it was usually at the hands of Robotnik, and those two tiny, stupid little spots you could hit him without dying.

I've played Sonic 2 probably more than any other game in my life. I think it falls apart a little at the end, but the vast majority of it is a wonderful masterpiece of game design.
