Bertone was the coach builder for the entire run, but in 1983 Fiat wanted to discontinue the car, but Bertone wanted to keep it going, so Bertone actually completely took over production until production ended in 1988. The X1/9 was the true mid-engined two seat sports car with a removable targa top that fit in the front trunk of the car. It had a wedge shape, and were fun little cars. I had several of them, and they were a lot more reliable cars than they were given credit for.

Actually, the explanation from Ferrari back in the day was that beautiful, firey, and temperamental, just like a red-head....paraphrasing, but that was the basic gist.

That’s a pretty inaccurate blanket statement. The 90's brought the Acura NSX, 3rd gen RX-7, and 2nd gen MR-2 just to name a few. All three still look good today, and the 3rd gen RX-7 is sexy as hell if you can find one in stock form.
