Yeah but he's kind of a dorky cool geek. Being calm cool and collected isn't really what he's made of, and that's ok. Actually I found his reaction to be pretty close to what mine would have been, especially at 25 or whatever he is. It's realistic in a way that Rachel's lovelife on Friends never was.
