Glad to hear you got out. Unfortunately I didn’t. Nothing physical preventing me from leaving - just the chains in my mind. On disability support pension due to mental illness because of it. Yes, I did eventually make it out - but it took decades.

I grew up with parents like Claudia’s. My mother died in 2016 and I still have to deal with everyone telling me what a great and powerful woman and mother she was. Anything I say is dismissed as me being spoiled or rebellious. Even though I’m 31, I still don’t have the right to my own narrative apparently.

Ironically, that's probably what made it worse. When my dad was home more often, he was a big asshole. I was thrilled when he had to work.

I feel like the conversion we’ve made in the last, oh, 60-80 years from a “repair” type system to a “replace” type system has exacerbated this a whole lot.

The main problem with sorting “essential/nonessential” is; how do you convince anybody to work if you eliminate all “nonessential” jobs?

I gotta recommend either as a substitute or a supplement for reading the book, the fantastic “You’re Wrong About” podcast did a series of episodes discussing her book and I was blown away! Jessica’s experiences became my go-to topic when making it through holiday family and friend phone calls.
