You should read Tolstoy. I just finished Anna Karenina and it was a near religious experience.

English degree here. I keep assuming that reading "trashy" books will be all fun & indulgent, but I keep finding that they are less fun & harder to get through than the "classics" or "highbrow" books because the writing is crappy. Hell, a lot of them aren't even any shorter.
Is it just me or are men getting worse?
I know everyone is really rage-y about this, but that whole statement makes me sad. First of all, it doesn't surprise me to see another abuse victim defend their abuser. Here's someone who, as a young, defenseless child, was victimized by abuse AND now thinks it is OK. That is basically how abuser manipulation work;…
Lindy, you're great and I always love your posts, but don't you feel like this article is a little cavalier? Would this article be the same if a man had pushed his newlywed wife off a cliff? It's actually pretty fucked up :/.
I think you bring up a good point here. Many of us tend to only voice our criticisms, address the problems. We're less vocal about things we like, or even things that we find just "ok". At the very least, it can lead to an unbalanced representation of what we actually enjoy. Especially if you're someone (like me)…
I have used this in the domestic violence/child abuse situation too. 'He/I' just can't help himself... Well, have you ever hit her in a busy shop? In front of her parents or friends? Or only behind closed doors. So clearly you can control your behaviour when there will be negative consequences to you, and I am…
My own thread! I'm both honored and flattered. I wasn't expecting positive attention from my post, perhaps even the opposite. You've all encouraged me very much!
In my middle school sex-ed class (which was abstinence-based, in Indiana... I don't know how the teacher got away with even this small tidbit about consent), we were taught to fight through the "he couldn't have stopped even if he'd wanted to!" bullshit by using the following thought experiment: If the guy's mother…
See, I always felt like all this makeup/clothes/hair stuff was less about "pretty" and more about being "compliant". (Said as and old skool freak that still misses her purple hair.)
Just throwing this out there, but there may be a kinder, gentler way to tell a young, teenaged girl that you don't have things that fit her that allow her to preserve her dignity as a person.
Am I the only person wishing it was ME that married Seth Meyers this weekend?
Am I a bad person for thinking the porcelain heart is stunning? It looks like it's Delft or something. I would gladly display that in my house. I want it terribly now.
I get the feeling that some people really regret the fact that you aren't able to buy wives the way you'd pick out a car or computer.
One time I was at a conference and one of the presenters in my panel talked about the studies relating to the myth that women are more talkative, and she cited a study where subjects had to listen to different conversation models and say if they think the conversation was balanced or dominated by one side or the…
I'm not the only one who grew up with the phrase "stepping out" to mean "cheating on partner", right? Right?
There was a time when "stepping out" meant cheating on your partner. That was back in the days when "red" meant Commie, not Republican.
Yep, I had to have a similar conversation recently - but not with my boyfriend, with our friend who stayed the night - it was a little awkward. My boyfriend and I live together in a small-ish one bedroom apartment, and him and his friend Pete often spend nights in our living room working on this music project they…
can you eat experience?
I always sing along to that song, "YOU HAVE NO SELF-CONFIDENCE, THAT'S WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL!"
