All the more reason we should be better than that.

That's possible, and if that were the reason for the donation, then maybe I'd feel differently. But the statement they release more or less confirms that they're doing it to make a point.

And that's disgraceful. As atheists, if we really want to be better than that, then we need to actually be better than that.

Exactly. That's my point. We have no leg to stand on as atheists if we act no better than the religious.

I am an atheist, and that's exactly why I believe it's imperative that we be better than those that exclude us.

They specifically said in their statement that they were doing this to make a point.

This isn't a matter of atheists donating to a charity that helps discriminated atheists. This is a case of an atheist being involved in a tragedy that include tons of people, and her fellow atheists decided she was the only one who was worth helping, specifically because it would help them make a political point.

Bullshit. They came right out and said they were donating to this woman to make a point. And ONLY to this woman, despite there being hundreds of other people who need the assistance as much or more than she does.

If you kids would stop interrupting you wouldn't have to hear it all the time.

So when you donate to a breast cancer charity, do they only help to cure breast cancer for black women?

The atheist cause is harmed when we come across as opportunistic and discriminatory. If we want to prove we're as altruistic and charitable as people who practice religion, then we need to actually live up to that. Picking one atheist out of a group of hundreds of needy people and only helping them does not do that.

Fair enough.

But for most groups the cause is helping people. This is someone using charity to make a point about what a good person they are. If you're doing it specifically to make that point, then you aren't as good a person as you think you are.

Very eloquent. If you don't mind, the grownups are talking.

No, I'm saying anyone who intentionally discriminates on their charitable donation based on the religious affiliation of the recipients specifically for the purpose of making a public political or philosophical point is an asshole.

You can be generous AND have activist goals in mind.

If you're trying to make a point, then make it.

Again, it doesn't matter if you're read your rights. There's no law that says you have to be read your rights when you're arrested. The law just says that your statements can't be used against you in court if they are not.

So what do they do? They donate to THIS ONE WOMAN. Hundreds of people need assistance, and they've decided to help this ONE WOMAN because she can be used as a pawn to forward their own agenda.

Yeah, but let's face it. This is a publicity stunt. This woman didn't ask to become a pawn in their propaganda game, and they started making public comments without ever contacting her first. You want to help someone? Help everyone who needs it. Donating only to an atheist when hundreds of other people need the
