If only it were as simple as a choice between dyed hair and gray hair. Beauty and artifice are important in our culture. To be sure, history shows that beauty and artifice are an extremely important dimension of any sophisticated civilization. Is it a hassle? For sure. But I’ve always felt that one must give beauty

Trust, I can relate: my friends like to drink, while I no longer do. Unforch I had a little bar installed in an alcove in my apartment about 7 years ago, back when I was partaking. When friends visit, they enjoy making cocktails at this tiny (but well-equipped) station, often cheerily bringing along ingredients for

Caroline, I’m a big fan of your column (and romcoms in general) and I adored Sleepless in Seattle. But I must confess I loathed You’ve Got Mail – it simply did not read for me. I found the juxtaposition of saccharine sentimentality and tyrannical corporate venality jarring. I couldn’t track with the emotional

“But you can fix him! I can’t believe you gave up so early! I thought I raised you better than that!” She lamented.

I’m with you. I cannot stomach such shows, which seem, from the first frame, to be a travesty of abuse, degradation, misinformation and a desperate, flailing thirst for attention and validation that is painful to watch. To say nothing of the horrible graphics.

A fabulous post, thank you!

Most criticisms of contemporary culture seem to be based on the idea that if an 8 year old child can’t process it, its a bad thing. Its as if they believe that the entire adult world should be accessible to the mind of an 8 year old child.

A worthy investigation, Kelly! I came across Netflix A Christmas Prince last year. Spent the first half hour internally squabbling with the filmmakers: “Where in hell is this supposed to be taking place?” and snorting at its marzipan conceits.

It looks sublime! Congratulations and break a leg’!

It is so dispiriting to see well-known stories dragged through the mud so that we are left with no doubt as to the ugliness of the world. (For one example, the last several takes on Robin Hood.) We are not edified, but end up being served an orgy of brutality for its own sake.

It feels increasingly like we’re in some kind of insane third world country. I dont feel safe in crowds. Always looking over my shoulder on the street. Lock my door the moment I get in to my apartment. The whole tenor of the nation is in the toilet.

Insightful.

Leo DiCaprio is the only actor I know of who scrutinizes his performances obsessively. Most others seem to employ a different strategy for generating a good performance.

Unless you’re playing venues that record your face in cinematic detail, the comparison just doesn’t track —

I was a new designer working at an LA design studio in the late nineties. Very low on the studio totem pole. At Christmastime I decided to give everyone I was working with a card. Didn’t have enough time to “make my own” and was having difficulty finding cards that were suitably “creative” enough.

I like your creativity! I’ve often found clear plastic shoes problematic and you have some great suggestions.

John Wick is a brilliant, multiple feature film ad campaign for the NRA, featuring little more than non-stop gun slaughter as fun, sexy and glamorous. Oh, and which the NRA didn’t have to pay for, because Keanu Reeves stans gleefully foot the bill to the tune of around $100 million.

Do makeup tutorials intersect with Influencers? If so, Im torn.

I hope you’re prepared to live without the makeup tutorials.
