Ha, yeah, the confusion is a real source of enjoyment around here.
the moral of the story is don’t bring a knife to a can fight.
It’s not just Federer of course. Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic exist to diminish the rest of the tennis world. Federer beat what, the current 6th, 7th, 11th and 13th best players in the world to win this Wimbledon? And yet you can find people saying that it’s a shame he never faced and real competition. And that should…
What got me, and turned me off Federer for a long time, was his comment to Roddick right after the match along the lines of “Andy, I know how you feel.” No Roger, you have no f-ing idea what it feels like to loose a match like that to someone who already has 14 Grand Slam titles.
Lifetime Roger superfan, but I agree with all of this. Initially, I was a huge Roddick guy, who I just saw as the next American stud. And I didn’t care for this Swis goofball with the bad stache and the man bun who was pushing my guy around. Now, Roger is my favorite athlete of alltime, any sport.
That Roddick match, as I recently discovered, struck a nerve with a lot of people. Me included. I remember his run-up, beating (a sorta-sour) Hewitt and playing just perfect next-level Roddick tennis against Murray to make the final, then playing out of his head against Fed, just to lose. And you are right, Fed…
Wasn’t “The Process” essentially Hinkie being the conservative’s favorite boogeyman, the dreaded Welfare Queen?
I realize that “American kid is trash, goes to Germany and is amazing within a year” is some sort of Billy Haisley wet dream, but that doesn’t make it true.
Re: Point B. That tax money coming from casinos and hotels could be put to better use than this. Opportunity cost is staggering.
I think you are looking too much into this. He is making this comparison for the American audience. And the standard bearer for greatest American player is Donovan.
That word has different meanings depending on which country of origin you’re from. I’m of Colombian descent and that word means something completely different to me; literally, a male whore. Really uncommon to hear it though, ‘puta’ is the pejorative of choice and it can be used in a bunch of different ways. It’s as…
They goddamn better!
FWIW, Orr himself said that isn’t true at his press conference.
1. Whether you think his take is good or bad, it matters. We don’t have to speculate about whether adding foreign born players might disrupt team chemistry or cause other problems. The example of 1998 shows how it can go wrong. But then, soccer history began right around the time that Billy’s mom sprung for the fancy…
and deodorant is basically just rubbing chemicals on your pits to cover up the smell.
I get that the stadium is a super bad deal but I could have done with out the MLS bashing Hot Taeks. Especially considering y’all didn’t write one article on the amazing series Toronto-Montreal turned out to be. Guess high-energy, good quality soccer with an intense geopolitical rivalry doesn’t fit the narrative of…
An earlier version of this story misspelled Alexei Kovalev’s name and mislabeled him as a “goon.” It has been corrected.
Dave, thank you for doing this. From our conversations, I have a sense of how much time you spent on this. I believe your aim was true and your heart was pure. As I read this, I am both angry and sad. Sad for what happened to my friend. Angry that I only knew of her condition after she had passed, when it was too late…
