Found it. It was Nano Defender. The guy who was maintaining it wanted to move on, so he sold the project to someone who used it to distribute malware and harvest credentials and log-ins from victims. Discovered in October last year.
I wish browsers had a notification when extensions change ownership so you could approve/deny continuing to use it without having to find out the hard way it was taken over.
