There were three versions of the motor in question, regardless of the car (same motor used in Golf, Jetta and passat).

I’m on my third diesel. My first is a TDI beetle, one of the dirty pre-urea systems. It’s been chugging along for over 268K miles. It still drives, and I handed it down to the son.

Also note, at the time only BMW had the urea technology, and VW would have had to licence it from them at an added cost per car.
