You’re actually wrong about the history of the movie. It was based on the real life story of Colleen Moore, who was a silent film actresses (one of the biggest at the time) and her marriage to an alcoholic. She was an actress not a singer and the story was tweaked in 1937.

This was never going to work smoothly in the US for the primary reason: INSURANCE
