At a conference last year I was talking with some Houston folks about commuting and I asked if they were ever able to ride a bike to work. They just laughed at me.
Like LeBron, the Challenger used to have O rings.
That’s the exact type of thing assholes do to give themselves another decade of good press and cover for their onset abuses. I worked on the HIMYM crew for years and he was bully. He would pick on PA’s for not wearing nice clothes, despite the fact that wearing
“show blacks” everyday is a job requirement. He’s was…
On how attitudes toward hearing vocal fry, upspeak and other youthful ways of talking are generational
See, I KNOW I’m not ditzy. My point is maybe let’s stop judging women on their speech patterns.
Uh, maybe let’s hold off on criticizing people until they are out of 5th grade?
What made Anthony Bourdain remarkable and why there are so many of people of color touched by his death is that he is the example of allyship that we all talk about. He traveled the world and everywhere he went, he treated people of color with a degree of respect we’re unaccustomed to by rich white men. He spoke in…
My first selfish thought, after the shock, was “Shit, I need him to keep making Parts Unknown so I can continue showing my middle school geography students someone who truly gets what it means to be a citizen of the world.”
There are so, so, so many moments, but one thing about him that comes to mind right now is his long-standing and outspoken support, appreciation, and admiration of Latin America and its people. We need voices like his now more than ever in the age of Trump.
I loved Bourdain for a lot of reasons, but this might be the top of the list. The biggest deal about it, to me, was that he changed over the past 20 years, too. Kitchen Confidential was written by a guy who respected women who managed to survive in a restaurant kitchen, but wasn’t all that interested in asking why…
This really sucks. I learned about the world from this guy. As an anthropology major during the height of no reservations, I can’t tell you the impact his show had on my adult perspective of the world.
Hat tip to Ashley Feinberg.
You don’t think the press can walk and chew gum at the same time? It’s not like anyone is suggesting that the media cover up the cause of death in suicide cases, but when the suicide rate in this country has risen 25% in the past 20 years it doesn’t seem like it’s too big of an ask for the media to commit themselves…
Sad, but not too terribly surprised. His work always had a bit of melancholy attached to it, which is what made his outlook and humor so compelling. A real loss, though, especially in a time in which thoughtful, intelligent discussion on TV is on the decline.

RIP. A damaged man who became a good man, and had a tremendous cultural impact. Felt like I lived his adventure for 15 years. Stood up for what was right. Expressed himself with enviable ease and wit. Could observe and participate without othering or fetishizing or appropriating. Sad to see him go. I guess those…
Bourdain was an advocate for women. He also used his platform to give a voice to the largely brown and Spanish speaking staff who make up the backbones of our restaurant industry.
I just want to thank Megan and Jezebel for this headline. So many news agencies this morning got this wrong when they put “suicide” right in the headline, and many then referenced suicide right in the article, multiple times.
Anthony Bourdain, chef, writer, and host of CNN’s Parts Unknown, has died. He was 61.
