Part of the trick is that, culturally, trains and buses are so ignored and derided that many folks only think of flying or driving themselves. And the fact that the passenger train system is a hot mess on the national level, and so many bus stations seem to be in the “bad part of town”, doesn’t help.

Airlines keep doing it because studies have shown again and again that people want to pay the least amount possible for a plane ticket.
