I’m beginning to get the idea that David Price might not know a whole lot about baseball prior to his career.

This is pretty similar to the function of the MLS designated player rule, although it’s not a percentage-based formula.
This is a very solid point.
I mean, this is the standard practice in almost every other sport in every other country, and even some sports here in the US. Given how utterly enslaved we tend to be to corporate profit opportunities, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened already.
I think, for me at least, the biggest difference is that there’s never been any question that combat sports - be they MMA, boxing, or otherwise - are brutally dangerous. People have been dying in the ring for almost 200 years. Our understanding of the dangers and how to prevent or mitigate them changes with time, and…
I misread this, and am now being righteously owned for accidentally humble-bragging about collegiate sports in the comments. I deserve all of this, and thank you.
That’s what it says on the varsity jacket I still wear at the college bar I still go to even though I’m 10 years older than everyone there! COME AT ME BRO, I COULDA BEEN SOMETHIN
Look at me, with no reading comprehension. Thanks!
This is a new rule? I feel like it’s been the rule in the majors for at least a few seasons, and it was the rule when I played in college over a decade ago.
I know it’s unpopular at Deadspin HQ, but seriously, it’s the middle of MLS season right now. It’s an option, and this season has been pretty exciting so far, with LAFC casually putting literally every other team in the league through a woodchipper.
Columbus rebranded to “Columbus Crew Soccer Club” a few years back, and go by “Crew SC” now, so there’s two!
I’m going out on a limb here, and maybe it’s just my privilege talking, but I learned why the sun is hot and space is cold - and, by extension, the difference between the vacuum of space and an actual vacuum cleaner - way before I earned a college degree.
I’m really disappointed in how many people didn’t get this.
To wit, also: Dodgers and Cubs and Astros and Royals fans may not know Mookie Betts as a household name, but you bet your ass everyone in New England does, and probably much of New York. No one else needs to know! The Sox aren’t suffering from his lack of national/international superstardom!
Is it actually loyalty if the player doesn’t have a choice?
That, uh, doesn’t invalidate the amount of time that it takes to get from Needham to Cambridge. It just means that you, too, should be aware of what a nightmare that can be. Also, I think the Boston Metro is #2 now.
I actually think, glaring miss aside, Altidore had an incredibly strong game. His hold-up play had the Mexico back line in fits, and he was linking very well with Pulisic and Arriola.
Thank you for posting this. My cousin passed away three weeks ago from AML, very suddenly, after looking for all the world like he was going to beat it for about a year. He wouldn’t even have seen his 23rd birthday if not for Be The Match. My entire family and most of my friends have been donors since his diagnosis,…
I really didn’t want to star this, but I had no choice.
Well done.
