I don’t think it’s a Sun/Moon effect. My partner lost his 3DS in mid-November right before the games arrived and went on a spree to find one then. It took him three stores before he could find one and even then, it was an XL when he wanted a standard 3DS.

I blame it on the backwards turn wifi took this generation. I’ve finished Moon, am playing Sun now and as far as I have found, you HAVE to be in the Festival to use Wireless. What a Step back from G6, when you could always be on wifi.
