I’m so sad! I had coffee with Ms. Locke a few years ago to discuss a project. She was so lovely. Kind, smart, a little eccentric, but really a joy to spend a morning drinking coffee (she had tea) and talking about film. She was such a talented woman, both as an actress and filmmaker. She will be missed. 

BTW, reading some info on this case, it appears the jury never heard much, if any, of her backstory, the fact that she was being pimped out, that she was being abused, whatever. The prosecutors argued it as a simple case of murder, ignoring all that led up to it, because, you know, black people need to be put in…

It doesn’t matter WHO she killed. She was a minor at the time and should have gone to juvie or a mental health facility, not prison.

I think that if she was white and/or male, she would have gotten 90 days. I’m totally serious. Our justice system is lopsided for people of color and it’s not right to just accept that…

I think the problem here is that she was not escaping her pimp, she killed a John and went back to the pimp. (I first had assumed she killed the pimp.)

Prosecution argued that she killed a sleeping man, defense argued that she was afraid the John would hurt or kill her. A 43-y.o. man who pays for a 16 y.o. prostitute…

She was a child escaping a pimp. I don’t know how that is lost on all the people on the judicial side of this. 

Not only does your life have basically no value if you are black, apparently if you are white your life is super important even if you are a perv that is picking up enslaved children to have sex with them.

I still can’t grasp the mindset of evil that goes through one’s life, mind, and body, that looks at this situation and says “She deserves to die in prison” as opposed to “We failed this child from the beginning, where she ended up, at 16, being pimped out for sex, and we need to help her, not punish her”

We may feel high and mighty that we don’t stone a person who was a victim of sexual abuse like some places but at the end of the day the justice system took her life away. Plenty get off lighter for premeditated and unprovoked murder.

I hope he pardons her; 14 years of prison has been very nearly half of Cyntoia’s life. Given the circumstances, even the time served seems exessive.
