I put a mud room into my suburban home about 10 years ago. I basically enclosed a breezeway. It is wonderful for cleaning mud/dirt/snow off of boots/clothes/dogs out of the weather. After crawling out from under a car or planting a tree, it is nice not having to clean a path of dirt out of the house.
