For the record, I'm 33 with a not-too-shitty job, but I only spent $5000 on the 2000 Jetta TDi, and upkeep has consisted of oil changes, tires, and washer fluid.

Nope. Sorry old chap. If someone "suddenly appeared" behind you "doing twenty over the limit" then that tells me that you must be doing it wrong. The only correct way to drive is to be constantly vigilant and hyper-aware of everything that is going on around you. It's called situational awareness.

Technically, what you just described is not using the CC in the passing lane. That is using the CC in the middle (or right) lane and then accelerating to pass in the passing lane... in which case you are ok.
