FFXI is still going after what..11 years? Soooo, no, it woun't fail as long as it has a steady number of subscriptions. And from playing beta since phase 2 I can promise you there are shit-loads of people willing to pay the sub.

The nice thing about subscription models (while they last) is that they tend to fuel future development, in a way that f2p often just leads to ensuring existing content stretches and farms the users' wallets as much as possible. Not having content built around "premium" one off purchases is always a nice plus too.

FF14 isn't going to be free to play either and it launches this month.

Valve will respond in the only way Valve knows how to respond.
