To add to this point. Maintain the engine according to manufacturers recommendations. Do not do the “if aint broke, dont fix it routine.

One of the big factors is packaging. A six will generally speaking be a longer or wider engine that might not fit into the space where it needs to go without modifications to the body shell. If this happens then you have to have the logistics to handle manufacturing for both shells instead of just one.
