From what I remember hearing and could be wrong, Miles did a bunch of aerodynamic work and planned to go after the sound barrier using a jet engine. The aero data was shared with the US military and made it’s way to Bell where they modified the fuselage to remove the air intakes and then installed a rocket engine.

Once you get out away from the cities, salt gets used less. A lot of municipalities and counties will plow and drop cinder on top to just give you something to grip. The states will usually still salt the highways though.
