This is only cheaper BECAUSE it doesn't fold. The 3D filter is incredibly cheap, actually. The cost reduction comes from the LCD being just one piece instead of two and then the reduced complexity of manufacturing/assembling an open-faced handheld.

It's actually pretty obvious that it was made with the Wii U in mind from the get go. The size and scale of the levels, the multiplayer, the touch screen mechanics, the graphics, all of which are leaps and bounds ahead of the 3DS. If you forgot, the 3DS already had a successful 3D Mario game, and the Wii U desperately…
