I assume that Malcolm didn't give Denise the idol because he actually would have preferred to have Lisa, Skupin and Abi vote her out. That would have left his hands pretty clean, and also gotten rid of what he perceives as his biggest threat.

Abi has gotten a total villain edit, basically from the very beginning, meaning that she will have to get her comeuppance in some fashion.  She can't win, no way, no how.
